Allstate Foundation Virginia High School League Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: $1,500
  • Number of Scholarships: 19
  • Application Deadline: March 15, 2024

During the academic year, a total of nineteen scholarships, each valued at $1,500, will be granted, with a unique focus on recognizing outstanding individuals in various categories within the Virginia High School League (VHSL) classifications. Specifically, one male athlete, one female athlete, and one participant involved in academic activities will be honored in each classification. In addition, a special scholarship will be awarded to a student from any classification who has overcome remarkable challenges to significantly contribute to athletic and academic pursuits. Eligibility for these awards is limited to students graduating within the school year.

VHSL member schools are strongly encouraged to nominate four students, each representing a distinct category (male athlete, female athlete, academic activities participant, and courageous achievement) for the scholarships. It is important to note that only applications submitted by member schools will be considered; individual submissions will not be accepted.

The Andrew Mullins Courageous Achievement Award, designed for a male or female student from any of VHSL’s six enrollment groups, acknowledges remarkable contributions to VHSL athletic and academic activities. This award is bestowed upon a student who has faced or currently faces severe illness, injury, or disability, has triumphed over significant adversity, such as challenging social or home situations, or has demonstrated extraordinary courage in other challenging circumstances against overwhelming odds. Nominees must satisfy all other criteria for Achievement Award selections, and at least one of the letters of support must detail the exceptional circumstances the student has overcome.

A distinguished selection committee of education, business, and media professionals will identify outstanding participants in each region’s boys’ and girls’ sports and academic activities. The top regional winners will then compete for the state awards. The committee will also select a student from each enrollment group for courageous achievement, and one will be chosen for the state award.

Candidates must have previously earned a varsity letter or its equivalent in designated sports or academic activities to be eligible for the award. Sports include baseball, basketball, cheer, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, indoor track, lacrosse, outdoor track, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. Academic activities encompass debate, drama, forensics, creative writing, newspaper, yearbook, magazine, academic bowl, or film festival participation.

All applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered to the VHSL office no later than March 15.

For eligible minors, parental or legal guardian’s permission is required to participate in the Achievement Award Program, subject to applicable federal, state, and local laws.
