An Act of Incorporation was duly passed by the legislature and marked by the governor on March 31, of 1887. Clark, a friend of Leland Stanford, was said to be motivated by the plans for Stanford University and founded the university with an endowment of one million dollars, and later counted another million dollars because he thought the university might someday face a lack of funds.
